Tips for Choosing the Right Housewrap

house wrap

I have a question involving radiant barrier house wrap on top of ZipR. I am in process of finalizing exterior wall designs and I want to place a radiant barrier with a Perm Rating of 6 on top of the Zip R. 'Ventilated rainscreen' is a term that gets somewhat misunderstood and defined differently at times. It isn't an individual product or material, but a design feature. The combination of a weather barrier, strapping and exterior cladding and ventilation openings at the top and bottom together create a 'rainscreen'. The intention of a rainscreen is to protect walls from a driving rain while allowing any water that does penetrate to drain out, and letting air move through it so it can dry.

Tyvek 9-ft x 100-ft Water Resistant House Wrap (900-sq ft)

Choosing the best house wrap is a short-term decision that can have significant long-term effects. A high-performing house wrap has the right balance of air and water resistance and vapor permeability to prevent air and moisture infiltration. It must also have the strength to withstand damage during and after construction.

Material science sets Tyvek® apart

House wrap ensures that moisture does not infiltrate into your inner wall assembly. Its expansive nature makes application quick and can also be overlapped and sealed to improve your home's building envelope. The days of using a hammer tacker to install house wrap are gone forever.

Can you use a vapour retarder paint on the ceiling instead of using a poly vapour barrier?

The caps protect the housewrap from damage during installation and spread the surface area of the fastener over a broader area of the WRB so the fastener is less likely to tear through. On center vertically and horizontally, others are as close as 12 in. On the installation side, when tar paper is used it must be “free from holes and breaks,” “applied horizontally,” with laps “not less than 2 inches.”   Vertical and other joints must be lapped 6 in. Figuring that tarpaper installation must be “free from holes and breaks,” it’s important to consider the effect of common installation practices like fine wire hammer-tacker staplers. Often the contact rim on a stapler rips a small hole each time the tacker is whacked. Another problem with fine wire staples is they frequently pull-through the WRB on windy days leaving holes that often don’t get patched.

Integrated WRB Sheathing

If you’re like most people, you know that a house wrap is nearly necessary and so now you just need to know which one to get. If you are hiring a contractor, trust them to pick the right one for you and your budget. Because if used inside, they would prevent water from getting outside.

The same testing also revealed a considerable difference in comparative moisture vapor transmission. Tyvek®HomeWrap® exhibited nearly four times the vapor permeability of perforated house wrap, which can only allow vapor to pass through punched holes. The superior vapor permeability of Tyvek® HomeWrap® correlates to decreased wall cavity drying times, and a reduced potential for mold and wood damage.

Tyvek Barrier Installation Instructions

(Include instructions for installing it!) Soffit stringers, trim boards and electrical meters all need house wrap behind them. Extremely aggressive, self-adhering flashing membrane designed to protect windows and doors from moisture penetration. The bottom edge of the roll must extend over the sill plate interface for at least 2″. It would help if you sealed the wrap at the bottom of the wall using sealant to prevent air leakage. Always begin at the bottom of your structure to enable proper shingling throughout the whole installation. Proper shingling is necessary for restricting water from entering the wall system and providing for water shedding.

Choosing the best house wrap: Tyvek® vs. perforated wraps

All of these will work but asking a contractor which is best for your project is ideal. While it would be possible to put it under some wall coverings, most indoor wall coverings don’t need anything like it and in fact, would suffer from it. Tobias runs an agroecology farm and a natural building collective in the mountains of El Salvador. He specializes in earthen construction methods and uses permaculture design methods to integrate structures into the sustainability of the landscape. House wrap is easy enough to cut with a sharp utility knife, but cutting a smaller piece off the roll can be a pain.

Conclusions about the vapour permeability of sheathing seem to differ heavily from different sources, We will run with the pack on this one for now, using the numbers most manufacturers cite. The ZIP System®, manufactured by Huber Engineered Woods, LLC includes ZIP System® sheathing panels and self-adhesive tape. The panels comprise oriented strand board (OSB) wood structural sheathing with a Grade-D 60-minute WRB exterior facer of medium density phenolic-impregnated polymer-modified product. The seam sealing tape is a polyolefin sheet, backed with acrylic adhesive.

The bottom flap should overhang just enough for the wall to overlap the sill plate when tilted upright. If the hole is larger than 1″, you might have to cut a piece of water-resistive barrier to cover it. Here, the top layer of the water-resistive barrier should be directed over the bottom layer at least 6″. Using a 1×4 or something similar, make the inside corner very tight.

If you are looking for a more reliable option than asphalt felt or grade D building paper, then polyolefin fabric may be the right choice. It is essentially a plastic house wrap that is available in woven, non-woven, perforated, and non-perforated options, so you can select the best type based on the needs of your home. The durability of the house wrap should be one of the main factors to consider when you are planning the project. House wrap remains in place for years, protecting the home from moisture, so if it isn't durable enough it could split, tear, or even crack, depending on the material. Barricade® Wrap Plus is made of a micro-porous, breathable membrane that allows moisture vapor to pass through and won’t trap moisture in the wall cavity.

When it comes to wraps, it’s important that the permeability must be at least 5, though up to 60 is recommended. So when choosing a house wrap, make sure you check its permeability rating. Does this mean that homeowners essentially have to choose between energy efficiency and indoor air quality? Today, several mechanical ventilation options can ensure that your household enjoys a steady supply of fresh air without compromising your indoor air quality. Depending on your climate, the home construction technique that defines your structure, and other site-specific considerations, a heat or energy recovery ventilator (HRV or ERV) could be worth considering.
